My Little Private New York

Like many other cities across the globe New York is divided into the day life and night life. There are the busy frenetic moments and those New York City rhythms.  People move in an automatic way almost without seeing each other, deep in their books, thoughts, work, inner lives, while in the evening they wind down anywhere from their local dive bar to the fashionista filled trendy joints that speckle the streets of this great metropolis. This post alludes to a previous one I wrote about the night life in New York that I often miss because Ashtangi time is by no means in the same zone as most night life. I usually miss the nightlife hours, since my bed time is quite early to allow for early yoga practice. We tend to utilize those hours in between night and day,  when I and most of my fellow Ashtangis wake up for our yoga practice. Those hours where many are still sleeping, others are awake from the night before, and still some are the twilight seekers in between. There are many of us across the globe who get up very early in the dark morning hours to chant, meditate, practice yoga and we all have a special bond the brings us together. We share a common purpose a common goal. There are others who I've seen on occasion in central park who train diligently for marathons or triathlons at 6am before they go to their "day jobs"but they are not in the same category.

In these hours between 4.30-6.00, the city seems to be its most magical, its at times almost quiet, and despite what you may think, yes the city does sleep. This is my favorite hour of the morning, that special time when those who are awake are either caregivers, builders, nurses, yogis or crazy souls who can't go to sleep. We  have a special bond. We see the city like no one else does. Before its busy, dirty, crowded  or  becomes every one's city. In those precious hours,  it belongs to us for a little while longer.

These are some of the things are make early morning New York Special

1. The streets are empty (great for photography)
2. The subway is empty
3. The bagel, muffin, coffee carts just open up so everything is fresh
4. You might even get a good morning greeting!
5. The amazing colors of the dawn over the city
6. The train ride over the Manhattan bridge with the Q line.

I salute the early morning New York warriors and here is a little song and some pictures to show you my side of  New York few people get to see.
